About Family Lauwers

Founded in 1995, Vegobel herb nursery from Duffel has since grown into the market leader for fresh organic potted herbs.

The business is run by brothers Tuur, Steven and Wim Lauwers, who turned it into what it is today: a 100% organically certified horticultural company covering 4.5 hectares.

It all started around 30 years ago with basil — and it was a hit right from the start. Thanks to their unique growing system using gutters, the brothers managed to deliver the scent and flavour of fresh basil to the table not just in summer but also in winter. This specific system made the switch to organic farming a logical step. The gutters hang one metre above the ground, creating a unique microclimate that makes the plants less prone to fungal diseases. As a result, pesticides and chemicals are not needed.

Sustainability and eco-friendly growing methods are also key priorities. All water used is 100% recycled, and the pots and sleeves (known as bio-plastics) are made from plant waste that is 100% biodegradable, benefiting nature. Offering herbs in pots also keeps them fresh until the moment they reach your plate — and that keeps customers coming back for more!

Vegobel’s success in this niche market is also thanks to their wide range of over 20 types of organic herbs available all year round. Peak periods are typically around holidays and during good (barbecue) weather.

Alongside classic herbs (like parsley, chives, mint, coriander, dill, rosemary, thyme, sage, oregano…), they also offer a more specialised selection, including wasabi leaf herb.

And finally, they’re happy to share some culinary tips. Fresh fruit with lemongrass, basil ice cream and oregano on pizza come highly recommended!
