As a born grower’s son, Johan took over the family business from his father in 2018. On around 78 hectares, Johan grows apples, pears, cherries and strawberries.
Johan’s busiest period runs from June to October. “During that time, we work seven days a week, 15 to 18 hours a day,” he explains. A typical workday starts around 5 a.m. and finishes around 8 p.m. “My main job is to get the workers started in the morning and to check throughout the day that everything is running smoothly and correctly,” says Johan.
The biggest challenge he faces during the growing process is the climate. “Climate change is causing more extreme droughts and frosts, and protecting the crops against this is a huge challenge,” Johan adds.
Besides being a passionate grower, Johan is also a true horse lover. “In my free time, I really enjoy going for a ride with my horses.”
