In 2021, Brecht Geerdens joined his parents, Louis and Paulette, in the family fruit farm. They started growing apples and pears in 1992 and, after a few years, looked for more variety. That’s when they added strawberries, and in the early 2000s, they expanded further by also growing cherries.
The busiest time of year for the Geerdens family runs from early May to the end of July, and from late August to early October. “It’s a busy but enjoyable time, and we really appreciate the connection with nature,” says Brecht.
Looking ahead, the family mainly wants to focus on improving harvest reliability. “That way, we can keep offering consumers a high-quality and tasty product, even when the weather isn’t on our side,” Brecht adds.
Working with BelOrta
The cooperation between the Geerdens family and BelOrta is going very well. “We’re an innovative company that actively invests in sustainability, and BelOrta does the same,” says Louis Geerdens.
Free time
Outside of work, Louis and Paulette are both active in various local groups. Paulette volunteers as a cook for the youth movement and is on the board of a women’s organisation, while Louis is a chairman for several advocacy groups, including the Boerenbond. In his free time, Brecht enjoys going on nice walks with his wife and two young children.
