The Reweghs family has been growing strawberries since 2002. They started small and have expanded steadily over the years. Today, they grow nearly 14 hectares of strawberries each year. More recently, Kristof and Kim decided to also start growing melons — the BelOmelon. Since the growing process requires similar infrastructure to their strawberry operation, the switch to this new crop was a little easier.
BelOmelon
Kristof and Kim were the first growers in Belgium to start growing local melons. They’ve been growing melons for two years now and believe it’s important for consumers to know these melons are grown right here in Belgium, not abroad. They hope the market will continue to grow as more people become aware of Belgian melons. For now, the Reweghs family has no further expansion plans for their business.
They say one of the challenges is making sure the harvest is completed at just the right time. It can also be difficult to find enough seasonal workers during the harvest period, although some of the team returns year after year. For the Reweghs family, November and December tend to be quieter months compared to the rest of the year.
