Gino Van Acker took over the family business from his father in 2002. He grows organic apples and pears on 15 hectares, with the support of his wife Nicole.
Gino says the harvest is the busiest — but also the most enjoyable — time of year. Like many growers, weather is a big challenge, so it’s important to react quickly.
The Van Acker family also grows pumpkins. They started this because a small piece of land was left unused. This way, they can target a niche market with a small quantity.
“Our collaboration with BelOrta runs smoothly and takes a lot of worries off our shoulders, especially regarding logistics,” Gino explains.
In their free time, they enjoy going on trips with friends on their mopeds or in their convertible.
Tip
Gino and Nicole love apple turnovers. They also recommend using slightly older apples or pears in pies, applesauce or jam. They believe a good and healthy life starts with what you eat — so choose healthy food like vegetables and fruit, preferably grown organically.
