About Family De Schaetzen

Daniel de Schaetzen started his small-scale fruit farm on 1 January 1992. Before that, he worked for two years as a self-employed assistant in his father’s business. Today, he grows Corina pears on 2 hectares, a variety of the well-known Conference pear that ripens quickly.

Taking over the farm means a lot to Daniel. He studied horticulture at graduate level and knew from a young age that he wanted to become a grower. Today, he is glad he was able to achieve that dream.

A short Corina season

The Corina pear season lasts about three weeks. Daniel starts harvesting at the beginning of August. By the end of the month, everything has been sold. “So it’s all about very fresh products.”

The cultivation is done according to the principles of integrated pest management. This is a sustainable way of growing using only natural methods and techniques.

Daniel uses pheromone confusion. Scent substances confuse insects and help control pests in a biological way. He also limits the use of active spray products, which keeps residues on the fruit low.

Working among the orchards

Daniel grows his pears with great care for nature. This results in a good and natural end product for consumers.

Life as a grower takes place entirely outdoors. Not even two days in the field are the same. The harvest period is especially special. “It is the most beautiful time of the year,” Daniel says, although it also brings a fair amount of stress.

One of the biggest challenges today is finding good staff members. Extra hands are especially needed during the busy harvest and pruning periods, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to find them.
