Cultivation through the years
Family history means a lot to him. As a young farmer, he continues the work of his parents, which gives him the greatest satisfaction.
His father used to combine fruit growing with arable farming. Robert-Jan chose fruit growing, while his brother focused on arable farming. They support each other where needed, and they value this cooperation.
The work behind every pear
Pruning starts in autumn and usually continues until the end of February. After that, flowering and growth begin in the orchard. The harvest takes place in August, when everything comes together and the results of a year’s work become visible. For Robert-Jan, the blossom period remains the most beautiful time of the year.
Fruit growing involves a lot of variation. Each season brings new challenges, with weather playing a major role. Global developments can also influence prices.
For Robert-Jan, quality starts in the orchard. He closely monitors his plots and intervenes quickly when necessary. He uses natural pest control as much as possible, with beneficial insects helping to keep the orchard in balance. In this way, Robert-Jan works as sustainably as possible, with respect for nature and the orchard. “Healthy fruit that is easy to eat. Straight from the tree and crisp and fresh, that’s when it is at its best,” he says.
