A few years ago, Bert Emmerechts and his brother Lowie joined their parents' business. They are proudly the second generation to run the farm. Bert and Lowie specialise in growing chicory, potatoes and onions.
They have a clear division of tasks: Lowie is responsible for arable farming, focusing on potatoes and onions, while Bert passionately handles the chicory production. During peak periods, they can count on 15 seasonal workers.
BelOrta grower Bert notes that chicory has become less popular among the younger generation and that consumption has gradually declined in Flanders. He is determined to put chicory back on the map for all age groups. “There are 1001 ways to enjoy chicory,” Bert adds.
The Emmerechts family continues to invest in producing top-quality products. They recently invested in a packaging machine to reduce damage to the chicory and built a new storage facility with refrigeration. This gives them more space, helps them work more efficiently, and allows them to achieve the best possible results.
