The Bries-Tijskens family has been growing asparagus since 1986. Sooi and Hilde started with hydroponic asparagus in 1986, later switching to open-field cultivation. Asparagus growing takes place in winter and is very intensive. During this period, Sooi and Hilde have little to no time for other hobbies. In summer, things quiet down and they enjoy meeting up with friends in the area.
“The best part of the growing process is harvesting, because that’s when you see the result of what you’ve planted,” says Hilde. They eat asparagus at least three or four times a week themselves. “I still love asparagus best when it’s steamed. Very simple, but so tasty,” says Hilde.
