About Family De Ryck

Tomerel is a cluster tomato farm in Melsele covering about 3 hectares. Half of the area is used for winter cultivation. The company was founded in 1989 by Eric De Ryck and Els and was taken over eight years ago by their son Jelle and his wife Annelies.

At Tomerel, every day revolves around fresh products, flavour, and quality. In a family setting, each tomato receives the care it needs. From seed to final product, everything is closely monitored, keeping the chain between producer and consumer as short as possible.

Variety in the work

For Jelle, the strength of farming lies in variety. “You do a bit of everything,” he says. “From greenhouse work to harvesting.” This diversity makes the job engaging. You see a product grow and know what you are working for. As a grower, delivering fresh, high-quality products to consumers brings the greatest satisfaction.

There are challenges too: energy, water and finding good staff require more and more attention. The energy crisis has even led to a temporary pause in winter cultivation, which means production is no longer continuous. Still, that does not stop Jelle and Annelies from growing crops all year round.

Sustainable year-round cultivation

The De Ryck family is strongly committed to sustainable cultivation. Even in winter, with a 1.5-hectare lit greenhouse. They work entirely with more energy-efficient LED lighting, collect rainwater and recycle materials such as rockwool. This helps them keep their cultivation as energy-efficient as possible.

Jelle and Annelies mainly want to show how versatile tomatoes are in the kitchen, from simple dishes to snack tomatoes, for young and old. Tomatoes are part of our daily diet, often without us even noticing.

The importance of buying local products

In today’s economic climate, agriculture and horticulture are becoming increasingly challenging. That is why choosing local products is very important. They are grown with care, quality, and craftsmanship, and that is something consumers can taste. “It starts with choosing local products,” says Jelle.

Investing, innovating, and bringing people closer to their food is their driving force. They are proud of their profession and what they do every day: growing tomatoes.
